Get Your Motorcycle Licence

In Ontario, obtaining a motorcycle driver’s licence follows a distinct process separate from acquiring a licence for other vehicles. Once you’ve fulfilled the required waiting periods and gained sufficient experience, you can schedule a road test.

Motorcycle road tests for classes M2 and M are offered from mid-May to mid-October each year, weather permitting. Booking for motorcycle road tests commences on May 1st. To ensure availability and prevent any inconvenience, it’s advisable to plan ahead and schedule the test in alignment with your motorcycle licence expiry date.

It’s worth noting that if you hold a combined licence, such as a GM2 licence, the date indicated on the licence card may pertain to the other licence rather than the motorcycle licence.

Vehicle Requirements

Vehicle Requirements for Your Road Test. Before your road test, the driver examiner must perform a basic vehicle check to ensure your vehicle is fit for the purpose. The driver examiner may request your assistance to ensure your vehicle is safe (i.e., trying the turn signals, brake lights, windshield, tire pressure, damage, etc.)

When you arrive for your test, please park your vehicle and go inside the DriveTest Centre to check in. Most centres have a self-serve kiosk for check-in; see a customer service agent if yours does not.

After check-in, return to your vehicle and wait for the driver examiner. If your driver examiner does not arrive at your vehicle within 30 minutes of your appointment time, please return to the customer service dispatch counter directly.

Class G Licences & Requirements for New Drivers

In Ontario, driving is a privilege that must be earned. An applicant for a Class G licence must:

  • Be at least 16 years old at the time of application.
  • Meet the vision standards established by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).
  • Pass a knowledge test about the rules of the road and traffic signs.
  • Pass two road tests (classes G2 and G) to become fully licensed.

There are three types of licences for driving Class G vehicles (cars, vans, small trucks):

  • Class G1: Level 1 of graduated licensing. G1 holders may drive Class G vehicles when accompanied by a fully licensed driver with at least four years of driving experience. Additional conditions apply.
  • Class G2: Level 2 of graduated licensing. Holders may drive Class G vehicles without an accompanying driver. Additional conditions apply, particularly to those 21 years of age or under.
  • Class G: A full licence to drive a car, van, or small truck. Additional conditions apply to those 21 years of age or under.
