Common G2 Road Test Mistakes
Common G2 Road Test Mistakes in Ontario

The Ontario G2 road test (G1 exit test) assesses basic driving skills and usually takes about 20 minutes. Examiners assess whether you can apply traffic rules, control the vehicle, and demonstrate safe driving habits in everyday situations.

Some of the most common mistakes to watch for are:

Missing blind-spot checks — Mirrors alone are not enough. Turn your head and check your blind spot before lane changes and other lateral movements. Ontario's handbook specifically notes that shoulder checks are necessary because mirrors cannot show everything in a vehicle's blind spots.
Rolling through stop signs — Bring the vehicle to a complete stop at the proper stopping position before proceeding when safe.
Not checking mirrors regularly — Develop a consistent observation routine instead of checking only when the examiner gives an instruction.
Poor intersection observation — Scan for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and other hazards before entering or turning through an intersection.
Incorrect lane changes — A useful routine is Mirror → Signal → Blind Spot → Safe Gap → Move Smoothly.
Turning into the wrong lane — Maintain proper lane position throughout the turn and avoid cutting corners or swinging unnecessarily wide.
Driving too fast or unnecessarily slowly — Follow the posted limit while adjusting your speed appropriately for traffic, weather and road conditions.
Following too closely — Maintain enough space to stop safely if the vehicle ahead suddenly slows.
Weak observation while reversing — Continue looking around the vehicle when reversing rather than relying exclusively on the backup camera. Electronic driving aids such as automatic parking systems, lane monitoring and backup cameras cannot substitute for demonstrating the required skills during the road test.
Rushing parallel parking or a three-point turn — Slow, controlled movements with proper observation are more important than completing the manoeuvre quickly.
Forgetting signals — Signal early enough to communicate your intention and remember to cancel the signal when necessary.
Poor steering or lane position — Keep the vehicle properly positioned in the lane and maintain smooth steering control.
Not yielding when required — Pay particular attention to pedestrians, cyclists, approaching traffic and right-of-way situations.
Getting distracted after making a small mistake — Continue driving safely. One error does not mean you should stop concentrating on the rest of the test.

Ontario's official handbook says the G1 exit road test can assess starting, stopping, turning, traffic signs and lights, controlled and uncontrolled intersections, parallel parking, reversing, anticipating hazards, and other safe-driving practices.

A Simple G2 Test Routine

Remember:

LOOK → SIGNAL → CHECK → MOVE

Before changing your vehicle's position, know what is around you, signal when required, perform the appropriate mirror/blind-spot checks, and make the movement smoothly when it is safe.

Important Test-Day Tip

Don't try to impress the examiner by driving unusually slowly. Your objective is to demonstrate safe, legal, predictable and confident driving. Make your observation habits clear, but keep them natural.
